Women use online gambling to escape reality

Increasing numbers of women in Scotland are turning to online gambling as a "coping mechanism" to block out failed personal relationships and depression, a new study claims.

The study, by an academic at the University of Dundee, also says easy access to gambling is likely to be a hidden cause of homelessness.

Women are being tempted online to enjoy the thrill of casino-type games such as roulette and blackjack by off-shore internet firms offering free practice sessions and personal chatrooms.

George Clooney and Rande Gerber are joining together with the preeminent real estate developers, Related Las Vegas and Centra Properties, to create Las Ramblas -- a world-class hotel, condominium and casino complex that will be the largest residential project in Las Vegas and continue to transform the city into a first-class urban destination.

Las Ramblas, a $3 billion project located on the burgeoning Harmon Avenue corridor situated just off The Strip, will encompass more than 25 acres and feature 11 towers with a luxury hotel, luxury residences (both condo and condo-hotel), bungalows, spa and health club, nightlife, dining, shopping and a proposed upscale casino.

Donald and Ivana Trump building Las Vegas

Donald Trump, the charismatic and outspoken real estate developer, recently broke ground on a new $500 million, 64-story condo-hotel, behind the New Frontier on the Las Vegas Strip.

Coincidentally, Trump's ex-wife, Ivana, just lent her name to a new $500 million, 80-story condo tower at the northeast corner of Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South. The media has predictably played off the former couple and their rival projects, suggesting that Ivana's high-rise is sweet revenge for an acrimonious public divorce. But the two projects, in actuality, are worlds apart.

They signed a contract with Cindy Crawford's husband, nightclub and hotel owner Rande Gerber, and the project is set to get underway in January 2006. It is reported that Brad will design the hotel, which will be situated on Las Vegas' famous Strip.

A source told America's New York Post newspaper: "George and Brad are not putting in any money, but they will be getting a percentage of the profits.

Casino slot machines in Moscow

39.jpg

The new Casino Angara on Moscow's neon-flooded Novy Arbat street is the latest bet that this country's love affair with gambling is a sure thing. The casino, which opened in February, has 32 tables and 69 slot machines on a floor that is aiming for a 19th century gentleman's-club atmosphere with its red carpeting, dark wood paneling and lamp light.

The VIP rooms behind heavy brown curtains, where the minimum bet is $200, are called the "The Study" and "The Library." The casino also stages cock fights and arm-wrestling.

"Nice place. Not bad," said Mikhail Kustanovic, 33, a self-described high roller who favors blackjack and poker. "But in Moscow there is so much choice."

Odds for Golf´s US Open

37.jpg

Tiger Woods is a 4-1 favorite with oddsmakers to win golf's U.S. Open this week. Phil Mickelson, who is statistically better with shots around the green, might be the safer bet at 6-1.

The 300-yard drives that helped Woods win nine major tournaments may not help him much in this season's second, which begins today at Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Rather, skills such as Mickelson's chipping and putting may be more important on the humpbacked greens of Pinehurst, where he finished second in the Open six years ago, said Jeff Sherman, assistant manager of the Las Vegas Hilton Race & Sports Book.
